Summary

From the bestselling author of The Best of Friends comes a heart-stopping psychological thriller about the shades of truth and the power of lies in the wake of one mother’s unspeakable loss。

Therapist turned stay-at-home mom Jules Hart’s idyllic suburban life shatters when she crashes her car into an icy lake。 Her son and another teenage boy plunge into the water with her, but Jules can only manage to save one—the wrong one。

Reeling from the death of her son, Jules spirals into a violent and unstable mental state。 Ten months after the accident, she’s still trying to reckon with the fact that she rescued Isaac Greer, another woman’s child, when Isaac suddenly vanishes。

Jules finds herself at the center of a massive police investigation。 While she harbors her own dangerous secrets, Jules is adamant that she didn’t take Isaac。 But then who did? Is Isaac the victim of a dangerous killer who’s been targeting boys in the Midwest? Or is someone else pulling the strings in this deadly game?

Difficult subject matter, but well thought out。 Also a plus is the more realistic portrayal of a psychologist…this of course was to be expected since the author is a clinical psychologist。

What the fuck did I read??

I wanted to love this。 I really did but it was just way too effed up。 I didn’t hate it, it was entertaining but it just sits like a dead weight in your stomach after and it makes you kinda wish you hadn’t ever read it。 No one wins, everyone loses and you’re left wishing you just didn’t know the story at all。 I only give it 3 stars because it was a great page turner and kept me reading。 Otherwise…。yikes。

After reading all of Lucinda Berry’s books in 2022, I was eagerly awaiting the release of her next book, but unfortunately I didn’t love this one。 ⚠️CW: Death of a child。 There is also A LOT of other sensitive content so look up additional TW/CW if you need to。 Jules Hart’s life is forever altered after her car loses control and crashes into an icy lake while her son Gabe and his classmate Isaac were with her。 Jules grabs onto what she thought was her son’s hand and pulls him out of the water。 A After reading all of Lucinda Berry’s books in 2022, I was eagerly awaiting the release of her next book, but unfortunately I didn’t love this one。 ⚠️CW: Death of a child。 There is also A LOT of other sensitive content so look up additional TW/CW if you need to。 Jules Hart’s life is forever altered after her car loses control and crashes into an icy lake while her son Gabe and his classmate Isaac were with her。 Jules grabs onto what she thought was her son’s hand and pulls him out of the water。 After emerging from the icy lake, she realizes that she saved Isaac, and not Gabe and cannot forgive herself。 This story is told in dual POV between Gabe’s mon Jules, and Isaac’s mom Amber。 Following the death of her son, Jules’ mental state declines。 Then, 10 months later, Isaac goes missing and Amber believes Jules had something to do with it。 Can the police figure out what happened to Isaac before it’s too late? Lucinda Berry’s history as a psychologist allows her to convey such an emotional side of her characters and touch on really heavy topics。 This book was no exception。 This book evokes a variety of emotions and you can’t help but feel empathetic towards both mothers, despite both of them being unlikeable characters。 I had originally planned to give this book a higher rating, but then this book took a turn for the worse towards the end。 So many different things happened that it took away from the storyline and it did not feel cohesive。 。。。more

Off the Deep End is my third book by Lucinda Berry but too bad it would be my least favourite。Lucinda Berry didn't do a good job with Amber or Jules, they were flat and annoying。 I couldn't relate to either of them, I couldn't feel their pain or hurt。 I felt that Lucinda Berry didn't know how to portray the characters so everything was vague。I was excited when I picked the book but it wasn't what I expected。 Some readers may enjoy the drama but I didn't get it。 Off the Deep End is my third book by Lucinda Berry but too bad it would be my least favourite。Lucinda Berry didn't do a good job with Amber or Jules, they were flat and annoying。 I couldn't relate to either of them, I couldn't feel their pain or hurt。 I felt that Lucinda Berry didn't know how to portray the characters so everything was vague。I was excited when I picked the book but it wasn't what I expected。 Some readers may enjoy the drama but I didn't get it。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 DNFWell, my first DNF of the year。 This book just annoyed me so much。 From Amber’s “Jules did it!” Attitude to the sessions with Jules to the awkward grammar and half sentences, I just couldn’t do it。 It felt like things were going around and around in circles and honestly I couldn’t stand Amber。 I didn’t feel anything for either of the main POV characters which made reading this really difficult。 I got this on Kindle Unlimited and if you want to read this I recommend doing the same before you s DNFWell, my first DNF of the year。 This book just annoyed me so much。 From Amber’s “Jules did it!” Attitude to the sessions with Jules to the awkward grammar and half sentences, I just couldn’t do it。 It felt like things were going around and around in circles and honestly I couldn’t stand Amber。 I didn’t feel anything for either of the main POV characters which made reading this really difficult。 I got this on Kindle Unlimited and if you want to read this I recommend doing the same before you spend on this。 。。。more

This book took some twisty turns with the main one being easy to figure out if you are really looking for it! Jules and Amber and Mark were frustrating characters, ones you’d like to give a good shake, and ones that if they would have just talked it wouldn’t have had such a devastating ending, but it was a compelling book from start to finish。 Thank you to Thomas and Mercer and NetGalley for an ARC of this book。 。。。more

This one pains me since I am such a fan of Lucinda Berry。 I was so excited for Off the Deep End and immediately downloaded it from Kindle Unlimited once it was released。 Sadly, I just did not love this one。There is so much unfinished business with this one。 There was no conclusion around the Dog Walker or what happened with that。 There were also other parts of the story that I feel were huge plots to the story with no conclusion。I also was not a fan of the ending。 I think the initial story was g This one pains me since I am such a fan of Lucinda Berry。 I was so excited for Off the Deep End and immediately downloaded it from Kindle Unlimited once it was released。 Sadly, I just did not love this one。There is so much unfinished business with this one。 There was no conclusion around the Dog Walker or what happened with that。 There were also other parts of the story that I feel were huge plots to the story with no conclusion。I also was not a fan of the ending。 I think the initial story was great and it kept my attention until the ending when I was left feeling very unfinished around everything going on。 。。。more

My first non 5 star read from Lucinda Berry。 This one feels a lot different。 The writing style is different, the voice of the characters are different。 The story deals about murder, abduction and grief and the psychological condition presented are consistent however, I did not feel any emotional impact as I read through the story。 Will read Lucinda's backlist and hope that I will enjoy her works as much as I enjoy saving noah, missing parts and the perfect child。 My first non 5 star read from Lucinda Berry。 This one feels a lot different。 The writing style is different, the voice of the characters are different。 The story deals about murder, abduction and grief and the psychological condition presented are consistent however, I did not feel any emotional impact as I read through the story。 Will read Lucinda's backlist and hope that I will enjoy her works as much as I enjoy saving noah, missing parts and the perfect child。 。。。more

With Berry, it’s either a hit or miss。 She is famous for disturbing topics and suspense, but this one fell short for me and would not be the one of hers I would recommend。 Read The Perfect Child, Missing Parts or Phantom limb which, while each very disturbing, are all much better than this particular release。

This book had a bunch of twists and turns! Ms。 Berry wasn’t kidding when she said it was a rollercoaster。 But I found myself a bit bored for like 70% of the book。 I’m glad I stuck with it as it was a good ending but not my favorite LB book。

Stacie

I enjoyed this book and I definitely was not expecting the ending。 Lucinda is definitely one of my go to psychological thriller authors。 Is this my favorite of hers? No。 But, it still did not disappoint and I am looking forward to her next release。

I love Lucinda Berry as an author and I’ve read two of her other books。 This book just didn’t cut it for me。 I felt bored when reading it。 I didn’t like the characters and thought there would be a bigger twist at the end。 I thought Jules would have had a bigger part in the ending。 I really wanted to like this book and was excited for it to come out but just felt disappointed。

This was a dark book that just got more disturbing until it became the "everything but the kitchen sink" plotline。 The pacing was good and it was a fast read which I liked。 The two mothers who were the alternating perspectives were the most hideous people ever。 I didn't like them, couldn't relate to them and didn't care about them。 The story had some interesting threads, but things were thrown in that didn't make sense and other storylines just petered out with out resolution。 I have read this a This was a dark book that just got more disturbing until it became the "everything but the kitchen sink" plotline。 The pacing was good and it was a fast read which I liked。 The two mothers who were the alternating perspectives were the most hideous people ever。 I didn't like them, couldn't relate to them and didn't care about them。 The story had some interesting threads, but things were thrown in that didn't make sense and other storylines just petered out with out resolution。 I have read this author before and really enjoyed her, but this one was not my favorite。 I will read her again in the future though。 。。。more

So, first off, I love Lucinda Berry。 She is extremely talented and very very smart。 The knowledge she has from her background as a child’s psychologist is meticulously entwined in her writing。 But, this book was just… way out of left field。 I had lots of moments where I thought “wait, what? That’s random。” I read a review in which someone said that she writes the mind of a child very well due to her background, but not an adult’s mind。 I think that applies to this book。 So overall, the plot wasn So, first off, I love Lucinda Berry。 She is extremely talented and very very smart。 The knowledge she has from her background as a child’s psychologist is meticulously entwined in her writing。 But, this book was just… way out of left field。 I had lots of moments where I thought “wait, what? Let me just start by saying that I love Lucinda Berry and have read almost everything she's written。 Not unlike her other books, Off the Deep End is dark and heavy and twisty。 It started out strong right off the bat。 However, I feel like she kept adding more and more to an already heavy book, which proved to be completely unnecessary and rather derailing。 The plot was all over the place and moved extremely slow for a while。 There is not one likable character in this book, and most of them are ac Let me just start by saying that I love Lucinda Berry and have read almost everything she's written。 Not unlike her other books, Off the Deep End is dark and heavy and twisty。 It started out strong right off the bat。 However, I feel like she kept adding more and more to an already heavy book, which proved to be completely unnecessary and rather derailing。 The plot was all over the place and moved extremely slow for a while。 There is not one likable character in this book, and most of them are actually despicable。 Overall, this one just didn't engage me like so many of her other books have。 。。。more

I think I need to reconsider just reading anything that comes out Lucinda Berry。 This one just wasn’t it for me。 I didn’t love any of the characters, rather felt annoyed by them。 I feel as though there were too many social issues trying to be crammed in, and not a strong focus。 I would much rather this turned to a find the serial killer book, but that’s not the wrote it took。

Another great one by Lucinda Berry!I was so excited for this book to come out I couldn’t wait to read it! Definitely did not disappoint! It was so good from start to end! The twists and turns!
